The first official mention of Scottish whisky dates back to 1494, in a document referring to an order of malt for the production of "aqua vitae" (water of life) by a monk named John Cor. This record marks the official emergence of whisky in Scotland, though distillation in more rudimentary forms likely began much earlier.
