Born in 1894 into a family of sake producers, Masataka Taketsuru is regarded as the father of Japanese whisky. After studying chemistry, he was hired by the Settsu Shuzo company, which sent him to Scotland in 1918 to apprentice in whisky-making. He developed a deep passion for whisky and decided to dedicate his life to it. In 1934, he built his first distillery, Yoichi, on the island of Hokkaido. As his success grew, he established a second distillery near Sendai in 1969, called Miyagikyo. Today, the Nikka Whisky group produces its entire range of Japanese whiskies from the single malts of these two iconic distilleries.
